You closed your eyes momentarily, trying to ward off the frustration that came with his conclusive remarks. "I told you... I didn't--"

"--Faint," he finished for you in berating amusement, now holding open the door for you to get in. "I know what you said, now could you stop playing your tough act and get in the limo like a 'good girl'?"

.: Chapter 2: The Hospital Visit

As you gradually awoke from darkness you were assaulted by white, flourescent lighting. The backs of your eyes violently protested in a hollow ache.

Your head lulled back and forth a few times, trying to grasp some semblance of equilibrium before it would allow you to sit up.

Slowly, you raised yourself up with elbows locked to keep your balance. The action brought your sluggishness to your attention...

Eyes taking their time to clear, your headache gave off jealous pangs of attention. Luckily, it wasn't as bad as before, but it still had this painful....

Wait.

This wasn't the street!

Dammit! You must've passed out!

A wave of shame washed through your entire body, but you forgot about it quickly and observed your new surroundings.

You were actually in a sterile-white room--

"Hey! You're awake!" a screeching voice violated your ears, breaking you out of your thoughts and making your headache spike.

You answered with a hiss, quickly bringing a hand back to your head to cushion the pain, almost curling the front of your body in defense.

"I'll go find one of the nurses!" the voice said in determination.

You suddenly heard a door open, almost too caught up in your headache to question very lowly, "Nurses...? Then where--"

But it seemed that you still weren't alone in the room, and this "stranger's" voice had made you twirl around in a startled yelp.

"You're in the Domino Emergency Care Unit," it said in cool irritation.

Sitting on a chair along the side of the sterile-white wall was Seto Kaiba, arms and legs crossed indignantly, and fixing his preturbed look at you; however, you were too confused to let his heated, icey eyes effect you.

You began looking around the room again, not really liking his blunt answer. It wasn't a very big room and it gave you the feeling of a machine: unhomely and mechanical. Perhaps it was because everything in the room was sterile-white. Even the cabinet and counter piece in front of you was white. The only things that stood out was the dull silver of the sink, and from what you could see of the bed frame, and the empty gray chair next to Kaiba...

...and Kaiba himself. Yeah, he had that machine-like feeling too.

Speaking of Kaiba, he was still drilling you with that glare, but he looked like he was trying to figure out what in the hell your confused look meant.

Your head was still throbbing away, now at a warm hum.

"So, uh...how did I--"

"I brought you here," Kaiba said curtly. That time he seemed angrier, and you didn't understand where it was coming from...

...Of course, you could care less about why Kaiba was mad. He was really starting to infuriate you with cutting you off every time you spoke, like you were one of his worthless clients.

"You could have left me on the sidewalk," you said quickly, crossing your arms and furrowing your brows downward. "I would have been fine."

"Sure you would have." His condescension was seeping into your skin, making you want to spit in disgust. His know-it-all attitude was enough to make you scream in frustration. You were definitely not in the mood for his mouth right now...

An ominously warm heat went through your head as you bit down your anger, knowing you'd have to get out of the room before your migraine kicked back up again. Sighing reluctantly, you swallowed and noticed how parched your throat felt.

Cautiously, you slid off of the examination bed while keeping a steady hand attached. You had a brief dizzy spell but it was brief enough to let go, so you slowly made your way to the door to exit the room...

...which just so happened to be right next to Kaiba.

But you didn't pay him any mind...even if you could feel his intense glare on you the whole way to the door. Your nerves were aching to walk faster so you could get out the door and know that his eyes were off of you. But you had a feeling that if you were to walk any faster that your dizzy spell might return...

You cursed your situation, but continued at your ansy pace.

...And just as you reached the door, hand on the knob, he decided to speak up.

"Where do you think you're going?" his tone was basically parental, only, this was Seto Kaiba. But then a thought came to you...confusion melting under the realization that Kaiba was just trying to cause you grief over getting a drink. A drink!

Your head shot around, giving him a half glare because of the fatigue you felt. "Why is it any concern of yours?!"

Kaiba never shifted his position, only his head turned when he asked where you were going. He was still in that arrogant, closed-off position, but his head and intense gaze had turned to face you.

"I don't know if you're aware of this," Kaiba's face scrunched up disgust, tightening his crossed limbs in mild irritation. "But it's not the brightest thing to go prancing around after blacking out."

You shut your eyes, trying to block out the rising frustration that Kaiba was causing you. You knew he was only trying to blame this whole situation on you...but he didn't even have to do anything about your situation!

"I'm telling you, I'm fine!" you kept your eyes closed and made to go out the door, feeling slightly disgusted. "Now, if you'll excuse me I'll be back in less than two minutes, constable!"

Without caring if he had anything more to say you flung the door closed behind you, feeling slightly better that some of the frustration was out of your system. You gave a big sigh, releasing more of the pent emotions and looked up...

...Seeing about twelve different pairs of eyes on you.

You froze, feeling put on spot. You hesitated a bit before realizing why they were staring at you.

"Oh, um, sorry 'bout that...," you rubbed the back of your head, feeling too embarassed to move in front of all those eyes. Your cheeks flushed.

As soon as you had apologized about the door all the nurses, patients, and doctors went back to what they were doing.

'Damn that Kaiba! He doesn't even have to be here to make my life Hell!' you thought spitefully as your embarassment subtley dissipated from the knot in your stomach.

Shaking off your frustration, you remembered why you had left the room in the first place -- your parched throat. Your mouth had that annoying cotton-feel, like you'd never be able to drink enough to quench your thirst. Carefully looking around the reception-area you found you couldn't find a water fountain in sight.

Mentally cursing, you knew you'd have to try and go find one on your own. After your recent display of frustration, you felt too embarassed to go ask someone, so, you decided to just head off to your left since there weren't as many people down that corridor.

Through a stroke of very ironic luck you actually managed to find a water fountain. To the right of a vending machine on the left side of the wall was a pristinely placed water fountain. Ignoring the vending machine, you honed in on the fountain. It was one of those twisty-knob ones that you were familiar with from your school in America.

Twisting the knob, you bent down a bit to the fountain (it came up to your waist) and took a couple of long gulps. You felt the cool water do magic over your throat. Taking a few more gulps, you felt that you had quenched whatever seemingly never-ending thirst...

Well, that was a very nice white and blue marble swirl for a fountain...

A dizzy surge passed through your head, making your vision swirl into a blend of colors. You felt your hand brace the water fountain and the dizziness faded, but a white-sickle throb had settled in your head again, and it kept growing...

Scrunching your face in pain, a nervous heat had settled into every part of your body, making you slightly perspire, but it added to how sick you were starting to feel...

Nausea had started to build up in the pit of your stomach, and your head began to hurt you really, really bad.

In brief spurts, you saw watery-blurbs of blue and white...but there seemed to be a lot more white than blue...but, it didn't look like the fountain...?

Tears had built up at the back of your eyes...it had never hurt this badly before! Another wave of nausea smashed against your stomach and your knees buckled.

You held your head, trying to cushion away the pain as white and blue still danced in your vision.

Why?

Why was it hurting this bad...?

"Kenzie!"

You suddenly felt like you had been broken out of some sort of trance, and you noticed that your pain was gone...

"Kenzie!"

It had left you so stunned and speechless...thoughtless...

You began to stare at nothing, wondering what the blurred colors in your vision were; they seemed to be a distorted picture of sorts.

"KENZIE!" You suddenly noticed that you were being shaken.

It was Mokuba! He was clasping your shoulders tightly with very concerned eyes.

"Are you okay now?" he asked in desperation. "I saw you kneeling on the floor, and you looked like you were hurt..."

You were really kind of spooked from how abruptly your migraine had come and gone, and you answered hesitantly, "Yes...I'm okay...I think..."

"Well then let's get you back to the room." Mokuba had grabbed your arm and helped you to stand the best he could. "I found the doctor and he said he'd be coming right away to check on you."

You didn't say anything as Mokuba helped you, appreciating the help since your knees still felt weak when getting up. Mokuba went to put your arm around his shoulders but you retracted it, saying with a bit of sincerity, "I'm fine, really. I can walk on my own."

As you both began to walk you noticed Mokuba silently pout out of your peripherial. You couldn't help but smile. He was such a sweetheart...so unlike his brother.

A thought suddenly came through your mind, 'I wonder...why is Kaiba such a jerk anyway?'

Soon, you had reached your room, but in a fit of exuberance you headed to block Mokuba from going in right away. He gave you an odd look, adding, "To get back in the room, ya know, I need to open the door..."

You sighed, nodding in affirmation. "Mokuba, can I ask you something?"

Mokuba's face scrunched up, his eyebrow shooting up as well. "Uh...sure?" he managed hesitantly in a "will I regret this" tone.

You sighed again, hoping the question wouldn't be too personal--

--But you were pulled out (literally) of you train of thought, heading back towards the door. Had you gotten dizzy and not realized it again?

In a final swing around, you came face to...well, chest, to a less-than-amused Kaiba. As he fixated a trademark glare at you, he quite profoundly said, "Three minutes. Fourty-two seconds."

It took a minute before you could register what he had told you in his deadpan tone.

"Wait, you actually counted?!" you exclaimed increduously, eyebrows pulling your eyes open.

He grunted, shifting his weight into crossed hands. "Well, with you fainting all the time it was hard for me not to conclude that you hadn't after almost four minutes by yourself."

Rage instantly surged through your arms and legs, making your fingers and toes tingle.

"I didn't faint!" you pronounced with little dignity, eyes furrowing deeply.

"Really?" Kaiba raised an incriminatingly eyebrow at your reaction. "Then what do you call 'randomly loosing consciousness for a period of time' then? 'Resting your eyes'?"

You sighed, knowing only you had heard. You resigned to Kaiba's sensical logic. Damn him!

"Just mind your own business," you said half-heartedly, closing your eyes and crossing your arms to get him to stop probing you.

"'Mind my own business'?!" he snapped, feeling tangible frustration reach your skin. Your eyes shot open, knowing you had just said something that rubbed him away that would not be amusing, even to you.

"'Mind my own business'?! I could have minded my own business if you hadn't shown up and fainted in front of me and made yourself my business!"

Kaiba had paused a minute, looking over how meek you had began to look over his spiteful comeback. You noticed this and tried to gather your voice.

"I told you, you could have just left me on the sidewalk you idiot!" you squeaked, trying to sound forceful, but it sounded all but successful. "You didn't have to help me!"

He gave you a chilling glare, his tone the same deadly cold that he seemed to carry around him. "Get back on the examination table and stop wasting my time!!"

You hesitated, actually feeling chilled by his glare. You looked away quickly, but you began to furrow your brows. The more you furrowed them, the more confident you felt in being angry. "I...I don't have to take this!" you announced resolutely. "I'm leaving!"

But just as you were about to leave, a man in his mid-forties was coming in to the room, disolving your escape plan. His hair was slightly tinged with silver here and there, giving it a nice, highlighted look.

"Well, you must be Kenzie Ray, I presume?" he stated distractedly, more interested on the "you" in his files that he currently had in his hand. He shut the door with his free hand as he entered the room which further disolved your escape.

You just stood there glowering in accusation at the closed door, feeling that blaming the door would solve something.

You heard the folder hit the counter, and the doctor began to rustle through the papers.

You continued glowering, but not at the door and didn't move. It'd be rude to leave now, so you were stuck here...

With Kaiba.

Presently the most despised person on your hate list.

"Ms. Ray, I'm going to need you to sit on the examination table if I'm to properly examine you," you could feel his tone sneer in an omnipotent attitude.

Releasing a reluctant sigh, you headed towards the examination table, exchanging a nasty glare with Kaiba on your way. He merely smirked at your demeanor.

You pouted inwardly as your swung your feet a bit from your seat on the table. You could feel Kaiba's eyes on you...probably amused that your plans at escape were thwarted.

"So...," the doctor began as he spun in his chair, gliding from the counter in his doctor chair to meet you. His face looked all but enthused. "You seem to have fainted on Mr. Kaiba here. Do we know what that was from?"

You cringed at his choice of "faint," but opened your mouth to reply anyway, "...--"

"She complained of a headache before she...," you had turned in confusion to Kaiba, and he eyed you intently, "...fainted on me."

You reflexively pointed at him in disgust. "I told you! I didn't 'faint'!"

"Now, now," the doctor intervened, stopping the on-coming arguement with a deadpan tone. "There's nothing to be ashamed of for an insufficient supply of oxygen to the brain. It happens. Especially when you're a migraine sufferer."

This...

This was ridiculous! Even the doctor was on his side!!

Redirecting your suspiciousness to Kaiba, you were taken aback when you saw that he was suspiciously looking at you. The look was making you really uncomfortable...

The doctor cleared his throat, semi-pulling you out of your trance. The doctor was expecting you to say something to his conclusion.

When he did it again you hesitantly turned to face him, still highly bewildered by Kaiba's look. "I...

"I already took my migraine medicine for today," you stated, turning to look at the doctor in front of you. "So they shouldn't even be coming up."

The doctor answered quickly like he knew you were going to say something like that. "Well, the prescription you have is a low dosage; it's only prescribed for going through the same stress level on your daily routine."

You brought a thoughtful hand to the side of your face, more so you could block Kaiba's intensifying gaze. You could feel his eyes boring into you; it was like he knew you were trying to keep something from him (and you were) and he didn't like it. A lot.

"I don't understand," you said, sounding more factual than confused. "I'm actually away from all of my stresses, so shouldn't my headaches be easing?"

The doctor turned to his side and picked up your file. He glanced over the file while speaking up, "Well I can see why you would think that, but you just drastically changed your surrounding environment," he said rather thoughtfully. "That in itself is a rather stressful change than what you're used to."

You would have pressed on with the topic, but you were already getting some questioning stares from Kaiba and saying much more wouldn't keep the topic as broad as you wanted. Kaiba definitely didn't need to know about your personal life if he was just berating you about your preceeding reputation...

"Fine," you sighed in reluctance, folding your arms in mild contempt. "What do you want me to do? Rest for the remainder of the day? I have no problem with that but I'm sure it's not as stressful for me to be here as you're letting on. In fact, I'm enjoying myself already."

The doctor expertly dodged your satirical intent, still coming off a bit preturbed. "Yes, in fact, I will prescribe bed rest for the remainder of the day." He picked up his pen and brought out a scratch pad from one of his large coat pockets, scratching on it furiously. "And I'll also prescribe a stronger prescription for your time here."

You would have argued the prescription strength, but you could tell he was annoyed with your attitude You were smart enough not to test this doctor anymore; however, you still gave a very reluctant sigh at his words, hanging your head in defeat.

When the doctor was done he went over to you and handed the prescription over, then headed over to Kaiba with a "click" of his pen and a clipboard.

"I'll need you to sign here, Mr. Kaiba and she'll be free to leave," he said stoicly, followed by the hollow scratching from Kaiba's signature on the clipboard. You just stared down at your paper the whole time...feeling like you being treated like a child.

And with that the doctor left without so much as a "goodbye" or "have a nice day." The door hung open and the busy sounds of the reception flooded in...

You heard Kaiba's jacket rustle and the rhythmic sound of footsteps banged in your ears.

"What are you doing?"

It was Kaiba, commenting in slight irritation. You registered that you hadn't moved from your spot on the examination table.

"Nothing," you murmured as you slid off the examination table and went to catch up with Kaiba and Mokuba. You really didn't know how to feel after that little charade; it confused you a lot.

You noticed you were now in an elevator and you focused on the sounds of the new environment.

Breaking the silence was the timid, but strong voice of Mokuba...his curiousity getting the best of him again.

"So...how'd you start getting migraines, Kenzie?"

You smiled at Mokuba's child innocence. "Don't worry yourself about it, Mokuba," you said, never taking your eyes off of the elevator light. "It just kind of...happened, really." You turned to look down at him, putting a hand on his head. "You know, migraines are hereditary."

"They are?" he questioned. "Are yours hereditary? When did you start getting them?"

You retracted your hand, fixing your gaze at the elevator floor light. "From what the doctors have told me mine are hereditary. And as for the the first time I started getting them...I think I was five or six. The first one I got was really weird, though."

You could feel Mokuba's curiousity peek. "How so?"

You smiled again. "Well, it's kind of silly. I think it was just me looking for something that wasn't really there...," you said wistfully towards the end. "I was with my dad and we were waiting for my mom to finish her shopping and I bugged him to let me go look in this trinket shop. That shop had so many neat things and a lot of medieval stuff. I remember the owner of the store knew I was always dragging my dad in so I could look and he pointed out a new piece he recently got in -- a white dragon. I stared at it for a little while and then I started to get a headache. We left a little while after that and that evening I got what the doctor told me was a migraine."

Mokuba seemed pretty busied with your your story and you continued to stare at the elevator light as you noticed something.

Kaiba had been oddly quiet throughout your whole conversation with Mokuba. In fact he had been eeriely quiet ever since the doctor mentioned your "stresses" and "migraines".

But you weren't going to break the silence no matter how awkward it felt...you were actually reveling in the fact that you could actually stand in Kaiba's presence without some battle of egoes.

The elevator made a final "ding" and the doors opened with a mechanical "WHOOSH." You followed Kaiba and Mokuba out of the elevator and into the main lobby. You didn't pay attention to any of the busy sounds as you finally made your way outside, where Kaiba's limo was waiting.

"Well...I guess I'll get my things and be out of your way...," you mentioned as you reached the limo with the two brothers.

Kaiba swung around to face you, making you jump by the sudden movement.

"What are you talking about?" he grounded out in contempt. He was looking at you like you were stupid. His voice was too.

You stood your ground and spoke with more purpose this time. "You've been upset with me this whole visit, right?" you began in a very matter-of-fact tone. "So, I'll just get my things and--"

"Look," Kaiba began rather tersely. "I'm not going to be held accountable if you 'faint' again, so why don't you just shut up and get in?"

You felt your blood go into a gradual boil, dark shades pulling to your face. "Stop treating me like a child!" You stomped your foot for good measure, glaring at Kaiba with just as much intensity.

"Then stop acting like one."

"Ha! You're one to talk! You wouldn't even apologize for accidently hitting me," you exclaimed increduously. "If you even did it on accident..."

Kaiba sighed in irate frustration, feeling more than put-off by your incompetence. "Just get in the limo," he spat heatedly, deepening his glare since you were starting to make a scene.

Well, you definitely had the advantage now. "Why should I? You've been nothing but a jerk to me. I mean, you're hardly gentlemenly-type material."

"Look, you--"

"Hey, Kenzie!" Mokuba expertly butted-in, knowing that it was the prefect time to switch the subject. "Can I see your deck? You can show me on the way to the hotel! I bet it's awesome!"

"Mokuba--"

"Well, sure you can!" you said in delight, making your way past Kaiba's towering form as you went to sit next to his kid brother.

You were faintly aware of Kaiba's glare as he followed in after you and closed the door, the limo taking off promptly after the "bam" of the limo door.
